We believe in operating responsibly

Putting tourism on a sustainable path is a major challenge, requiring industry wide leadership, partnership and a long term commitment. At The Fabulous Getaway we believe in operating responsibly and our aim is to monitor and manage our impact and to support our local and wider community. We have successfully implemented a sustainability management system based on GSTC criteria (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) and we are well on the way towards becoming Travelife Certified, the industry’s leading international sustainability certification.

We believe that, as travellers, each of us has a responsibility to limit our impact on the environments and communities that we visit during our trips and to champion positive change, not only as we travel but in our day-to-day lives as well. Towards this end, we have put together a set of responsible travel tips to help you explore and experience Sri Lanka in the most sustainable way possible.

Travelife Partner Award

The Travelife Partner award is a recognition of our commitment towards social and environmental sustainability. We are complying to more than 100 criteria related to sustainability management, office operations, working with suppliers and customer communication. We are working towards further improvements aiming to eventually reach the Travelife Certified stage in 2024.

Travelife is a three-stage certification program for tour operators and travel agents: (1) Travelife Engaged; (2) Travelife Partner and (3) Travelife Certified. We are at stage 2 – Travelife Partner.

Reducing our Plastic Waste

We are constantly working on making holidays with us as plastic-free as possible. In our efforts towards this, we have now introduced reusable water bottles which clients can refill and use while they travel. As an alternative, we also do provide glass water bottles as a substitute for the plastic bottles. While this has completely eliminated our consumption of single-use plastic water bottles, our efforts to reduce any other use of plastic and to always seek greener alternatives are constant and ongoing.

Supporting Local Communities

Being able to interact and learn from the islanders is an important part of travel and we believe that it is equally important to be able to support different communities, be it financially or even by helping with manpower and resources. We have helped several clients with their requests to engage with the community, sometimes by facilitating the building of washrooms for a school and even painting the classrooms.

Reducing our emissions to tackle climate change

We are conscious of our emissions, both by staff travel as well as client travel. While on an internal level we have started analysing our travel patterns and are working on ways to reduce emissions by way of car-sharing and a ‘Work from home’ policy, we have also invested in newer vehicles for our fleet. Our efforts to help tackle climate change are constant.
